HOW TO IDENTIFY SCAMMERS

Scammers prey on defenceless members of society. This includes, but is not limited to, those who are elderly, lonely, or facing financial difficulties.

Therefore this piece on how to identify scammers.

I thought it might be a good idea to teach you how to identify scammers. With so many consumers being at risk of being scammed out of their hard-earned money,

When an AI bot was asked to define a scam artist, it provided the following definition:
‘A scam artist is someone who deceives others to gain money, personal information, or other benefits through fraudulent means. They often use manipulation, lies, and tricks to exploit their victims' trust or vulnerabilities. Essentially, they're con artists who thrive on dishonesty to achieve their goals.’ (AI)

SCAMMERS PREY ON FINANCIALLY DISTRESSED CONSUMERS –
STAY ALERT – STAY SAFE!!!

Being in a tough financial situation can make it appealing to look for alternative ways to earn extra income. Finding ways to earn extra cash in a tough economy can lead to various opportunities. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that you know how to discern whether this opportunity is driven by a scam artist or not.

Stay on the lookout for potential scams!
However, it's crucial to remain vigilant for potential scams. If you’re among the many households finding it difficult to stretch your rand, you can be the perfect candidate for a scammer to defraud you from your hard-earned income without you realising it's a scam before it’s too late.

Is the offer too good to be true?
When individuals are struggling financially, they frequently fall victim to scammers who make extravagant promises. But eventually, it leads to heartache and despair. The saddest part is that these scammers really know how to take advantage of desperate, vulnerable consumers who are just trying to get by.

How can you determine if the opportunity you're evaluating is genuine and not a potential scam?
Conducting a thorough investigation into the entity and/or its management is essential to confirm the legitimacy of the opportunity you are considering.

Learn how to conduct thorough research.
No matter how dire your financial situation, always remember, if it’s too good to be true, it’s quite possible that it is not true.

Refer to the following:

1. Credentials of the company.
2. Reviews of the company.
3. Testimonials from previous clients/participants.
4. Complaints from previous clients/participants.
5. Verify their registration at relevant institutions, such as the NCR.
6. Talk to other companies in the same field to learn how they operate, what sets them apart, where they are registered, and why.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER BEFORE DIVING INTO THE OPPORTUNITY
– NO MATTER THE EXCITEMENT-

Scammers prey on trusting consumers to make their scams possible.
When you find an opportunity to earn more money, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement. But often, we rush into things without hesitation. Such behaviour tends to lead to regret and, worst of all, financial ruin. Take a moment and hit the 'PAUSE' button. Stay grounded.

Investigate:
Examine the proposed opportunity with careful consideration. Carefully evaluate the risks and benefits before proceeding with any commitments. Making informed decisions can protect you against potential scams that may jeopardise your hard-earned income.

TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS:
Back in the day, when I started my career, I had a mentor who imparted one of the most valuable lessons I've learnt in life. This is a lesson I continue to follow to this day. He emphasised the importance of listening to your gut feelings.

When in Doubt CUT IT OUT…

1. Don’t rush into any agreements prior to reading the complete contract, its fine print, and, if necessary, enquire about the meaning of terminology, phrases, or paragraphs if you don’t understand them.

2. Consult other service providers to see how they work and if their explanations reflect a sense of truth and make sense.

3. Never be pressured to pay money to partake in the programme.

4. If there’s a fee involved, always ascertain what you’re paying for and why it cannot be deducted from your so-called extra income you’ll be earning when partaking in the programme.
(Only applicable with earning extra income)

5. Never succumb to pressure to make a decision without conducting a thorough investigation into the programme or opportunity.

Scammers often utilise stolen information for their activities, so it's important to follow these steps to prevent them from defrauding you of your hard-earned money.

DON’T SHARE:

1. Identity numbers
2. Banking details
3. Payslips

Check the Prefix on the Website:
The prefix on the website must always be “https://”. This means that the website is secure, and when you submit your personal information, it will be safeguarded and dealt with in a professional manner.

BE CAREFUL ABOUT SHARING:
Personal Information via email or text messaging

RED FLAGS:
What are the unmistakable indicators that you're working with a scammer?

a) When enquiries regarding their qualifications arise, they tend to become rather uneasy.

b) Upon requesting the pertinent evidence of their accreditation by the governing bodies relevant to their industry. They would try to justify withholding the documentation in question.

On a more positive note, let’s delve into some ways to earn extra income in South Africa:
There are still ways to earn a bigger income. It might not be as much as you 'd need to make a better living, but every little bit helps. If someone assures you of a substantial return on investment and it appears to be to good to be true, it most probably is.

Take inspiration from these suggestions.
1. Find an after-hours job, for instance, if your day job is an office job, maybe become a server at a restaurant or moonlight as a bartender for extra income after office hours.

2. Sell cosmetics or something similar on the sideline.

3. Buy used goods, restore them and sell them for extra income.

4. To all the master bakers out there: Start by making baked goods and selling them to family members, friends and acquaintances or on markets.

5. Make clothing or some artwork and sell it on street markets.

6. If you have a skill like photography, writing, etc., use it to earn extra income.

7. Sell pre-loved items. Thrifting is big in SA lately, and you can make some money by selling pre-loved clothing.
